EWU Student Portal Redesign
The EWU Logo and Photos used in prototypes belong to Eastern Washington University. I used these assets because this project is only a learning exercise.
This redesign was meant to simplify and increase the usability of the Student Portal service of the EWU website. The process was informed by user personas which were modeled after interviews with active users.
Wireframe Process
Multiple rough wireframes were created to learn how to best meet the need of users. In my interviews I heard two major criticisms: 1) Too many options on the front page, with no indication which are important and 2) The users have to search to find relevant upcoming dates or deadlines.
Prototype Creation
Finally, the best wireframe concept was taken to a finished prototype in both the mobile and desktop web space. This version places upcoming events and dates at the forefront with a series of call-to-action screens. These would clue the user in to what's coming up on campus, and feature a series of prompts that help students get ready for their next academic steps. The long list of options from the original portal has been condensed into a simple menu system with clear hierarchy and no redundancy.
Takeaways
The project was a great way to get to understand the needs of users and bring design solutions to near-completion. It's a process that I am looking forward to repeating and building a greater understanding for in the future.
Thanks for watching!
